Virus and no access to internal files
17th Mar 2011
Call logged: The user couldn’t access Exchange or any internal files.
Resolving the problem:
The user explained that their PC had a virus and they couldn’t access any internal files or connect to their Exchange server. Our IT engineer firstly removed the virus with Malware software to avoid any malicious attacks to the system. We dialled in remotely to access the network and ‘ping’ the server across to the network but this didn’t respond so we therefore checked the network properties. Through further investigation we found that the virus had manually changed the DNS settings on the network card to use the public DNS servers, which meant that the user couldn’t connect to their local server or files. To resolve the problem, we amended the settings onthe network card, setting this back to automatic. Once this was complete the user could access all their internal files and Exchange so they could receive E-mails again.
